The one of a kind Waling-waling (Vanda sandariana) is famous for its one of a kind mesmerizing beauty. Davao City is indeed the dwelling of the king and queen. We have the Durian fruit which is labelled as the king of fruits. And along with it we have the Queen of the Philippine Orchids to complete the monarchial attributes of Davao City. The discovery of the waling waling was accordingly by accident in 1882 when one of Mr. Sanders explorers by the name of Roebelin was despatched to the Philippines to search for new species.

The “waling waling” is found in the foothills of the majestic Mt. Apo. The flowers are usually flat and have a short spur on the lip. The flowers are large in size, being 4 to 5 inches across. A stem of this flower can produce eight or ten appropriately shaped flowers and upon the maturity of each waling waling flower as it chants in colors of pink, purple and chocolate. The said captivating trait is considered as one of the most beautiful species. The said flower showcases its floral beauty during the peak month of July until December.

In Davao City, most of the locals has an orchid garden and mostly have a waling-waling in it to complete the garden. Waling-waling can be sold in cheap during the Kadayawan Festivals and in Araw ng dabaw. This is where the best breed of waling-waling will be showcased and seedlings are vended in affordable price. However full grown and flower bearing waling-waling is quite expensive.
